Supporting early career professionals across southern Africa

Background
As part of our commitment to capacity strengthening, we have been co-developing an early career pipeline (with early career professionals’ and in-country partner input) to support students, recent graduates or those just starting out working in ecology / conservation careers to strengthen essential skills and boost confidence to support their career progression.

About the training programme
This one-year early career training programme is aimed at providing early career professionals with an opportunity to join courses in employability, research, people engagement and leadership skills. Priority will be given to bat researchers, ecologists or conservationists (bat workers) based in southern Africa but where places are available, we will extend this to early career professionals working on other taxa in southern Africa and bat workers based in mainland Africa and the surrounding islands.

We are go!

We are delighted to announce the official launch of our early career training pipeline - we welcomed 30 participants from 10 African countries to the training programme!

Learning objectives
  • To develop and strengthen key knowledge and skills among early career professionals based in southern Africa and where possible across mainland Africa and the surrounding islands.

Courses to be covered
  • Developing your career - CV/application writing, interview skills and networking
  • Grant writing
  • Monitoring your Impact/Theory of Change
  • Assessing Key Biodiversity Areas

Timescale and delivery method
Our training workshops will be run online via Zoom. Sessions will be recorded and made available to registered participants along with additional resources.

Target audience
The training programme is aimed at MSc, PhD or recent graduates (including BSc), researchers, ecologists and conservationists in southern Africa.

Benefits of attending the training
The training programme will equip early career ecologists and conservationists with key knowledge and skills to support career progression. A certificate of attendance will be issued at the end of each training workshop. Please see below some selected quotes from those who have attended similar BwB training:

"The training I received from BwB as an early-career conservationist has given me the knowledge and skills to enhance my career. I have learned a lot about bats, their significance in the ecosystem, and the various approaches used in their conservation. Additionally, I have had the opportunity to connect with fellow bat enthusiasts, which has given me the encouragement and support to further my commitment to bat conservation" Wongani Sibande

“The BwB training enabled me to gain much needed experiences and learn lots of skills that have paved a way for my career growth as I now have a full-time role as a Field Ecologist” Alison Simpanzye
