Jo Harper

Jo came to bat conservation via gibbons! She was researching gibbon conservation education in China and had just secured a contract to work with the Hainan gibbon post MSc when Covid struck and the contract came to nothing. Joining conservation project management training with WildTeam, Jo met Rachael and was introduced to the fascinating world of the straw-coloured fruit bat. When a friend subsequently asked if she was interested in joining the casual bat survey team for a local ecology company, Jo jumped at the chance and is now a permanent member of their team and is working towards her bat licence. Originally teaching Chinese and maths in both primary and secondary schools, Jo gradually expanded her teaching to conservation education before taking the plunge to change career.

On her two days off, Jo heads a local bee conservation group and regularly delivers bat or bee assemblies for local schools, Scouts or Rangers groups. She has 5 cats and 2 dogs (and 2 daughters) and fosters rescue hedgehogs in the winter. She is very excited to be involved with Bats without Borders!
