Capacity development and strengthening in southern Africa
We are committed to increasing bat research and conservation capabilities in southern Africa, by providing equipment, knowledge exchange and raising funds for research projects within our priority areas.
In 2014 we hope to launch a knowledge exchange programme by matching experienced ecologists from around the world with bat groups, students or researchers who would like additional help and support on specific projects. For example this could involve offering tailored training in bat ecology and survey methods to new bat groups, ecology students and other interested wildlife groups or working in the field on projects to help with hands on training, experimental design advice and promoting best/ethical ways of working (e.g. use of radiotags, extracting bats from nets, etc.).
We see this as a two-way development opportunity. Local groups will work in partnership with experienced bat workers from around the world to develop the knowledge and field skills and in turn the experienced bat workers will develop their teaching/coaching skills and enhance their knowledge of the local flora and fauna of the region.
